CHAPTER 7
SELF-DEFENCE
This is arguably the most important chapter in this book. It is not always possible to be in possession of a firearm or other weapon or to be able to access and use your firearm or other improvised weapon in numerous situations. This then leaves you in a situation where you will have to rely on your reactions and responses to an attack using physical and mental skills. Are you prepared to use violence against violence?
The average person has to prepare himself or herself to be able to instantly go from “zero to hero” on the violence scale in case of an attack where all other options are unavailable. When I refer to “hero”, this by no means indicates a reckless or negligent approach to your defence and attack strategy. It simply means that you need to raise your level of violence to a level higher than that of your attacker, who is now a potentially deadly opponent.
The often drawn-out debate of whether violence solves violence can be simplified to “kill or be killed”! This does not mean that you have to kill your attacker. If you have incapacitated your attacker and there is no longer a threat to your life, then you must stop your counter-attack.
There are a lot of people who say, “Ooh, no, I could never stab somebody with a knife” or “I don’t believe in violence.” The message that I am sending now is aimed mainly at these people. You cannot rely on your fortified home, your security systems, and your security company or police services. It is too late if, for example, you are being strangled to death to then wish you had listened to my message that you need to learn the skills of self-defence. Genetically, we are all wired for violence.
It is my honour and privilege to be able to introduce you to a man amongst men, a true gentleman by the name of Alan Mann. Alan is an exceptional person, as you will see as you read on. He has enlightened me on the art of self-defence. Alan is an authority on a form of self-defence known in South Africa as Krav Maga.
I am not going to refer to any other recognised form of self-defence in this book. That’s not to say that I am against all other forms of self-defence; on the contrary, I believe that all other forms of self-defence are good to know. However, Krav Maga is designed to end a conflict or fight situation as quickly and effectively as possible by targeting the most sensitive areas of the body, including groin, eyes, throat, and knees.
I am so impressed by the effectiveness of this form of self-defence – the fastest-growing form in South Africa – that my 22-year-old son, currently a fourth-year university student, will become an IKI Krav Maga SA instructor before I finish writing this book, having been trained by my respected friend Alan.
About Alan and His Training Strategy
Alan is the product of a long and varied civilian and military career and is a retired South African Special Forces operator.
